Privacy Policy for Bound

Bound has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics. I do not collect, receive, store, or sell any personal data. Everything the app knows about you stays on your device, except for the specific requests described under "Services you can choose to use" below, which go directly from your device to third parties you have chosen.

Who is responsible

Bound is made by Saúl Enrique González González, an independent developer based in Guatemala, acting as the data controller for the purposes of this policy. Contact: [email protected].

What stays on your device

All of the following is stored locally, in the app's own container on your iPhone, and is never sent to me:

• Which apps you block. Your selection is handled by Apple's Screen Time (Family Controls) framework. Apple gives the app opaque tokens rather than the names of the apps, so Bound cannot see, and never learns, which specific apps or websites you chose.
• Your reading progress: the book you selected and the chapter you marked as your current position.
• Your reading streak and the number of emergency unlocks you have used, stored in the device Keychain so that reinstalling the app does not reset them.
• Your settings: question engine, question type, and auto-lock interval.
• Books you import from your own EPUB files, and books you download from Project Gutenberg. Their text is stored in the app's Documents folder.
• Quiz questions generated in advance, cached so the quiz opens instantly. This cache is temporary and the system may clear it at any time.

Deleting Bound removes all of it, except the streak and emergency-unlock counters kept in the Keychain, which iOS preserves across reinstalls. Contact me if you want instructions to clear those too.

Services you can choose to use

Google Gemini (only if you set it up)

Bound can generate and grade questions in two ways. By default it uses Apple Intelligence, which runs entirely on your device: nothing leaves your iPhone.

If your device does not support Apple Intelligence, or if you choose Gemini in Settings, the app uses Google's Gemini API with an API key that you create and paste yourself. In that case, and only in that case, the following is sent from your device directly to Google:

• the text of the chapter the question is about;
• the question and the answer you typed, so it can be graded;
• the title of the book.

These requests go straight from your device to Google using your own key. They never pass through any server of mine, and I never see them. Google's handling of that data is governed by the terms of the Google account whose key you are using; see the Gemini API Terms and Google Privacy Policy. Your API key is stored in your device's Keychain and is only ever sent to Google.

If you would rather nothing leave your device, use Apple Intelligence or simply do not add a Gemini key.

Project Gutenberg

If you open the public domain catalog, the app requests book listings from gutendex.com and downloads book files from gutenberg.org. These requests contain no personal data beyond what any web request necessarily carries (such as your IP address, which those services receive directly). Nothing is sent about you, your reading, or your blocked apps.

What Bound does not do

• No accounts, no sign-in, no email collection.
• No analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs of any kind.
• No tracking across apps or websites, and no data shared with data brokers.
• No sale or sharing of personal information, as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act.

Children

Bound is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect any information from anyone. Because the app collects nothing, there is nothing about a child for me to hold or delete.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, or to object to its processing. Since I hold no data about you whatsoever, there is nothing for me to retrieve, correct, export, or erase on your behalf. You are in full control: deleting the app removes your data from your device. If you have used a Gemini API key, you can revoke it at any time in Google AI Studio, and you can ask Google directly about anything it holds.

If you believe your data protection rights have been infringed, you may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with an updated date. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
